FLIBS COVID-19 Current Preparedness Statement

May MYP/PYP/CP Workshop

8 April 2020

Given more precise and understandable direction from federal and state government regarding actions necessary for the next 6-8 weeks, we have decided to re-schedule several workshops:

To replace these, we have scheduled several new workshops, and--if you were registered for one of the workshops above--we invite you to register for one of these new ones instead. Please note that the November 2020 workshop and the February 2021 workshop are an unusual mix for FLIBS--DP/MYP/PYP. The IB has not yet made final our course lists, but all previously-offered subjects will be offered in one of these upcoming workshops (unless, of course, the workshop has been de-commisioned by the IB). Remember, you may register for one of the workshops in blue right now! Once the lists are final, we will open registration for the workshops in red below:

If you reserved a sleeping room with the TradeWinds, your reservation will soon be cancelled (you will receive an email from the TradeWinds). We sincerely hope that you will register for one of our new workshops; in that case, you will be responsible for re-booking with the TradeWinds.

FLIBS refund policy

  1. Any registrant may transfer to one of the new dates for no charge
  2. Any registrant may receive a credit for a future workshop (good for 24 months) at no charge
  3. Any registrant may cancel the registration and request a refund (incurring a service fee)
    1. If the cancellation occurs15 or more working days from the first day of the workshop, such refunds will entail a US$50 service fee. This fee pertains even if your school has not yet paid.
    2. If the cancellation occurs14 or fewer working days from the first day of the workshop, such refunds will entail a service fee of 50% of the registration fee (US$487.50).This fee pertains even if your school has not yet paid.

In Closing

You may be a bit miffed at the $50 cancellation fee, but please try to understand that FLIBS is a close-to-the-bone non-profit service organization, and we are desparately trying to stay afloat so that we may serve the IB world in the future. Please keep in mind that this is an evolving issue for all of us, and we are working hard to ensure that IB educators from all programmes have access to IB Professional Development.

Thanks so much for choosing FLIBS. We regret these developments and are striving to serve you in a responsible manner. We very much appreciate your patience.

Sincerely,

We at FLIBS certainly understand your concern about our May 2020 MYP/PYP/CP Workshop. Rest assured, we share (even amplify!) your concerns. This is where we stand today:

Given the leniency of our refund policies (cf: https://ibo.org/professional-development/which-type-of-training-is-right-for-me/cancellation-policy/), we ask that you wait as long as practical to make your decision. And please realize that we will update this announcement immediately should we receive any new information.

Sincerely,

Businesses involved in traveling and gathering have been communicating with their customers recently regarding the coronavirus (COVID 19). We at FLIBS are doing the same today so that you will know the latest developments related to your upcoming FLIBS workshop in May or June 2020.

First, please note that neither our county (Pinellas), our city (St. Pete Beach), nor the TradeWinds Resorts have been included in any threat level whatsoever. Here are the measures being taken by the TradeWinds, our workshop venue:

Second, please be aware that local officials here have been very active in keeping abreast of COVID-19 developments. The Visit St. Pete/Clearwater agency just completed a COVID-19 call with U.S. Travel and other national agencies, including the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Customs and Border Protection, Department of Transportation, Federal Aviation Administration and Tourism Economics. The overwhelming message is that the federal government is NOT recommending limiting domestic travel during this situation. In fact, the CDC has a host of helpful questions and answers surrounding inquiries about canceling a trip. We encourage our participants to refer to these.

Third, we are referring daily to the Florida Department of Health and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the IBO for updates.

Finally, only if we are mandated to do so by Florida or federal authority, will we cancel any workshop. Remember that FLIBS is a non-profit dedicated to supporting IB education; we are your partners in this PD venture rather than a corporation concerned mainly with profit. We have had the recent experience of canceling a workshop due to a hurricane threat, so we have plans in place if necessary. FLIBS will be fair and prompt in offering credits and in rescheduling the event. You may register with this reassurance.
