Forest Park Elementary School

Forest Park’s Mission is to develop active, inquiring, and knowledgeable lifelong learners who achieve high standards and who make a difference through intercultural understanding and respect.  We do this by providing learning opportunities that are truly relevant, significant, challenging, and engaging.  International-mindedness is developed through the Learner Profile, and is supported by our “Passport to Peace” program that uses the 12 PYP Attitudes.  In addition, we try to develop a Global Perspective through our Units of Inquiry.

Our teachers use a variety of teaching strategies, but the biggest focus is on some form of inquiry across the different disciplines.  We strive to lead our students to a deeper, concept-based type of learning as we teach to our conceptually-based “Central Ideas”.  The students get to use many different types of resources, including two new PC-based computer labs, 6 Mobile Mac Labs, flip cameras, an iPod Touch lab, as well as a fully-equipped Media Center and Science Lab.  Students are truly involved in the learning process as they develop questions based on the units of inquiry, set goals, self-evaluate, and reflect on a continual basis, and maintain a portfolio used for their student-led conferences.

Forest Park also strives to develop students who will take action to help make their community and world a better place based on their learning engagements.  In January 2010, our students were fortunate enough to be involved in raising money to assist the earthquake victims of Haiti.  Nike sent a team to our school who worked with every student as they used their creativity to design t-shirts, sneakers, and shoelaces.  So far, over $500,000 has been raised.  Our students are very proud to have been a part of this “action project”.  It certainly served as a “springboard” about what taking action is all about, and how demonstrating the Learner Profile can truly make a difference.
